Specialty coating and engineering firm United Protective Technologies will open a site in the city’s centre to concentrate on its work with the federal defence sector.
“This is what we do for a living. Our business also includes a scientific component. For the military, we are creating innovative technologies that will increase performance, extend component life, and lessen corrosion.
According to Marty Efrid, CEO of UPT, “We need to be in that area, someplace between Western (Pennsylvania) and Michigan, because we have a customer base here that we currently serve out of North Carolina and the trip is too great.”
According to Efrid, the defence sector accounts for about 35% of the business done by the company.
“There is a lot of support for firms to come in and have dialogues and have a structure to go into that don’t have a presence in the area,” Efrid added.
He claimed that while UPT “looked at other places,” it ultimately decided on Youngstown due to the assistance provided by Team NEO, Youngstown State University, and the Youngstown Business Incubator.
According to Efrid, UPT anticipates beginning operations in December or January after completing a deal to buy a structure on Federal Street.
UPT’s Youngstown location is located downtown on East Federal Street across from the Penguin City Brewing Co., according to the office of U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, who met with Efrid and other businesses involved in the defence industry on Friday.
In its first three years of business in Youngstown, UPT intends to hire 30 workers, and by year five, that number will rise to 60, according to Efrid. The company has 60 employees working at its Locust, North Carolina, headquarters. The company’s main office will continue to be there.
OPPORTUNITY NASA, the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force are just a few of the federal organisations for which UPT undertakes research and development. Injection moulds, weapons, knives, valves, gears, and other industrial, commercial, and consumer goods are also coated with a cutting-edge thin film coating to increase product longevity.
The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber aided UPT in choosing a location and connected the business with contractors and partners for human resource development. “The Mahoning Valley has a wonderful opportunity here. Shea MacMillan, vice president of the Chamber of Economic Development, claimed that it combines some research and development with practical production. Along with trained personnel, this facility will also house some Ph.D. employees.

The Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Research Innovation Institute (AMARII) in Youngstown, which linked the business to the Youngstown Business Incubator, is where MacMillan claims the connection to Youngstown was created.
